SsangYong's new seven-seat Stavic people-mover is now on sale in Australia, arriving with a $29,990 drive-away price.

Matching or undercutting the price of its nearest rivals - including a number of smaller offerings - SsangYong's Australian distributor Ateco says the new Stavic offers features you'd pay an extra $9000 for with other brands.

Rivals for the Stavic include Hyundai's $39,990 diesel iMax, the $44,990 2.2 turbodiesel Kia Grand Carnival and Toyota's 2.4 petrol Tarago at $48,990.

The new Stavic's Australian debut follows its global unveiling in February and replaces the awkwardly styled first-generation model, which debuted in 2004.

For this new generation, there's an Actyon Sports-inspired front end design, while the rear features a new evolution of the familiar Mercedes-like D-pillar design.

The new Stavic is offered in Australia in two trim grades, both powered by SsangYong's familiar 115kW 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel.

Matched to a five-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive layout, SsangYong promises fuel consumption figures of 7.8 l/100km.

Suspension is by a double wishbone setup at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

Features

Standard features include dual-zone air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, power windows, 16-inch alloy wheels (full sized spare), heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, CD/MP3 player, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

A luxury option is also on the way, due here in the coming months. Price is still to be confirmed, but we can likely expect a figure in the low $30,000s.

The luxury model will add 17-inch alloys, seven leather seats and a powered driver's seat, rain-sensing wipers, roof racks, headlight levelling function and a rear fog lap.

Safety features with the new Stavic include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, active roll over protection, front and side airbags, seat belt pretensioners and child seat anchorage points.

The new Stavic measures 5130mm long and 1915mm wide, and rides on a 3-metre wheelbase. Towing capacity is rated at 2000kg braked and 750kg unbraked.
